About this Workshop

Being a first-generation graduate student presents unique psychological, financial, social, and academic challenges. In this session, a panel of MIT first-generation graduate students across different programs will speak about their educational experiences. Panelists will discuss their paths to graduate school and share tips and tricks about the application process. Panelists also will discuss how they prepared for their qualifying exams, conducted research, published their research work, and managed their relationship with their advisors among many other relevant topics. Furthermore, the panelists will discuss the resources available for graduate students and how to navigate graduate school financial challenges. Lastly, the discussion will be open to students to ask questions and learn more about strategies and ways to overcome the unique challenges faced by first-generation graduate students.
